Aidan is a sweet and kind 8-year-old boy who attends Hoover Elementary School. He loves adventure, being with his family, and going to school.
Aidan is considered a medical miracle and has already overcome a tremendous medical journey at such a young age.
Aidan was born with a congenital heart defect called Hypoplastic Right Heart Syndrome (HRHS). There are additional diagnoses including tricuspid atresia, transposition of the great arteries, along with a complete heart block, requiring full dependence on a pacemaker.
His predominant diagnosis is a Single-Ventricle Heart, essentially meaning that one ventricle never formed in utero, causing Aidan’s heart to function with modified circulation and decreased oxygenation to his body.
There is no cure for HRHS, only a three-staged surgical treatment (the Fontan procedure) that reroutes the blood flow in Aidan’s body. At age 7, Aidan completed the third and final stage of treatment.
Aidan has survived 6 open-heart surgeries, 5 of which were on the bypass pump, a handful of heart catheterizations, and long hospital stays. He and his family are very hopeful that he can now focus on just being a kid and enjoying life.
Aidan has overcome so much as a child and his story is a powerful reminder to be a fighter and never give up. Aidan shares his story with the hope of inspiring others to believe in themselves, have compassion for others, and live each day to the fullest.
Aidan will be adopted as the Sparrow to Hoover Elementary School. Hoover students will work hard to earn money for Aidan through sponsored community service.
