Read Luke's Story

Luke is a talented fisherman. He loves the great outdoors, adores his support dog Stella and camping with his family. He also loves basketball, riding his scooter and playing video games.
n
nLuke was born with a condition called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome-HLHS, which basically means he has half a heart.
n
nShortly after birth, he needed multiple open-heart surgeries to save his life and repair his heart.
n
nLuke is now 12 years old and has had 16 surgeries to date. More than half of those surgeries have been emergency surgeries to save his life. He is a walking miracle to all who know him.
n
nAs a result of living with HLHS, Luke’s physical capabilities are limited. He tires easily and is forced to take many activities lightly, as to not overstress his heart.
n
nThis will be a life-long battle as Luke must take heart medications daily and doctors must monitor his heart regularly. More surgeries will come. It is not a matter of if, but when. He will most likely require a heart transplant at some point.
n
nLuke is a true warrior who has endured so much more than most in his young life, but he continues to be an inspiration to those around him.
n
nLuke will be adopted as a Sparrow to Rex Putnam High School. Students will work hard to not only love and support him but also raise money for Luke through sponsored community service for medical and daily expenses.
