Read Sam's Story

Sam is a resilient 16-year-old with a zest for life despite overcoming major medical challenges.

Sam enjoys Legos and Minecraft as well as music, audiobooks, adventuring, shipwrecks, dining out, and has a love for animals.

Sam’s medical journey started when he was diagnosed with Medulloblastoma at 4.5 years old. Sam endured multiple surgeries, radiation, and chemotherapy, and faced life-threatening setbacks.

He underwent multiple surgeries to remove a tumor, had an internalized drain, and a chest port for medications. He received 31 radiation treatments to the brain and spine, followed by six months of chemotherapy. He faced challenges in eating and relied on IV nutrition for five months.

Sam survived a life-threatening bloodstream infection (sepsis) due to a weakened immune system and had to overcome multiple speech and mobility setbacks. He walked through all of this with unwavering determination.

Sam continues to defy the odds, managing learning challenges, daily medications, and mobility issues all while keeping his positive outlook.

Sam is a sophomore in the TEN program at Sheldon High School. He is committed to learning and personal growth.

Despite adversities, Sam’s spirit remains unbroken, he is remarkably resilient, determined, and has a special ability to find joy in life’s simple pleasures.

Sam will be adopted as the very first Sparrow to Thurston High School in Springfield OR. Students will work hard to earn money for Sam through sponsored community service.
